Plan the Perfect 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

Follow a practical seven-day Sri Lanka route combining ancient heritage, hill-country scenery, scenic experiences and relaxing coastal time.

Plan the Perfect 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

Seven days in Sri Lanka can offer a rewarding introduction to the island's culture, landscapes and coast. The key is to choose a realistic route and avoid spending too much of your holiday travelling between destinations.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle In

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to your first overnight destination. Depending on your arrival time, you may prefer to rest or explore nearby Negombo.

Day 2: Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle

Explore Sigiriya Rock Fortress and, if time and energy permit, visit Dambulla Cave Temple. Consider staying nearby rather than travelling onward late in the day.

Day 3: Travel to Kandy

Head towards Kandy and explore the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake or the Royal Botanical Gardens, depending on your arrival time and interests.

Day 4: Nuwara Eliya and Tea Country

Travel into the highlands to discover tea plantations, scenic viewpoints and the cooler atmosphere of Nuwara Eliya. Allow enough time for the winding roads.

Day 5: Ella's Mountains and Waterfalls

Continue to Ella and choose from Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls or a guided hike. Check current access and railway arrangements if you hope to include a train journey.

Day 6: Wildlife or the Southern Coast

Choose a safari at a suitable national park or travel towards the southern coast for beach time. Including both a long transfer and an extensive safari may make the day tiring, so prioritise what matters most.

Day 7: Relax and Return

Enjoy a relaxed morning before travelling towards the airport, allowing sufficient time for road conditions and check-in.

Make the Itinerary Your Own

This is a suggested route, not a fixed schedule. Distances, traffic and attraction opening arrangements can affect what is practical. For a more relaxed holiday, remove a stop or add an extra night.
